Back from the Northwoods
When I was a young pup, my family used to rent cottages and lake homes in the summer. It was a blast. We often took the grandparents there, so there would be three generations of Limbachs on the lake. Great family bonding experience. We almost didn't take a vacation this year, but at the last minute, we pulled something together.
My wife and kids (G7, B9) had never been to the Northwoods, and we live in northern IL. We'd been to The Wisconsin Dells, Disney World, Cancun, Germany, Naples FL, and South Carolina on past vacations. We drove to SC once, in our Hyundai Elantra GT. 16 1/2 hours each way from the suburbs of Chicago. We usually try to get some free plane tickets through our Visa travel card - we rack up a lot of points every year. It wasn't to be this year, though. Just a little short, and every trip had a connnecting flight. Yuck.
With airfares higher than in previous years, our expected vacation to Hilton Head, SC was looking like a bank-breaker. We had such a good time in Harbor Town, we wanted to go back. It was time to introduce my family to "God's Country." The land of Northern Pike and the best cheddar cheese you'll ever put on a cracker.
You can live like a king on vacation in Wisconsin for half the cost of a vacation to a more "exotic" location. We paid less for gas (about $90 for the whole trip) than it would have cost to park our car for a week at the airport (about $128 in remote parking for 8 days).
We don't own a large car, a van, or an SUV, so traveling long distances is a challenge. With gas prices, we intend to get by with our two compact cars. Besides the Elantra, our other car is a Mazda Protege 5 (see photo below).

Our friends, the Liu's, who live near us came up later in the week for four days. They have two kids, one (Allyson) who is our goddaughter. Lots of fun.
Kudos to The Beacons in Minocqua, WI for giving us a great family environment for our last fling of the summer. School started this week. We caught a lot of panfish (sunfish, perch, bluegill, crappie) and a few bass. The fishing is better in May and June Up Nort' as they call it in Wisconsin.
We rented a pontoon boat for two days, and rented a Waverunner another day. Everyone loved spending time on the water.
Look at this Monster Perch!
